My friend, everyone goes to Stone Town slave market. But do you know there is a SECOND slave place – hidden, secret, where slaves hid AFTER British said slavery is illegal?

Mangapwani Slave Cave – this is not in town, it’s on the beach, dark, painful, real. No tourists, no big crowds. Only you, the cave, and my story.

I combine it with Spice Farm in morning (sweet taste) and beach in afternoon (relax). One day – sweet, bitter, and beautiful – like Zanzibar history.

This tour is my personal favorite – because my great-great grandfather was kept in that cave.

8:30 AM – Pickup From Your Hotel
I pick you anywhere – Stone Town, Nungwi, Paje, Jambiani. We start early to avoid heat in cave.

Car is private, with AC, water included.

9:30 AM – 11:00 AM – SPICE FARM – Sweet Start

We start sweet, not sad.

• Arrival at my family farm Kizimbani – flower crown for you!
• Spice Walk: 30+ spices – Cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper – you touch and taste from tree!
• Fruit Feast: Huge tray of 15 fruits – jackfruit, pineapple, durian (if brave), 6 bananas, sugar cane juice pressed live – eat as much as you want!
• Coconut Show: My uncle climbs barefoot in 10 seconds!
• You buy real spices $2/pack to take home.

1.5 hours – easy walk, flat.

11:00 AM – 11:30 AM – Drive to Mangapwani – North West Coast
Beautiful drive through villages to Mangapwani village – you see salt flats, baobab trees, ocean coming.

I tell you on way: After 1873, British stopped slave market in Stone Town. But Arab traders still did it ILLEGALLY – they hid slaves in this cave at beach, waiting for boats to Oman.

11:30 AM – 1:00 PM – MANGAPWANI SLAVE CAVE & CHAMBERS – The Hidden Pain

We have two places here:

1. Mangapwani Slave Chamber (Above Ground):
Big coral cave building built by Arabs to KEEP slaves – 100+ people in small dark room, no windows, only small hole. You go inside – you feel the heat, you smell history. Guide shows chains still in wall. Very sad, very real.

2. Mangapwani Slave Cave (The Famous Coral Cave):
5 min walk down to beach – big natural coral cave, very dark, with fresh water lake inside. This is where slaves hid after market closed – illegal trade. You go inside with torch – bats flying, water dripping, you see where slaves slept on coral rocks, waiting for dhow boats to take them to Arabia.

I tell you story of how British found this cave in 1880s, how slaves escaped.

Not many people know this place – only 10 tourists per day, not 200 like Stone Town. Quiet, powerful, you can really feel.

We also see the old slave boat dock on beach.

1:00 PM – 2:30 PM – MANGAPWANI BEACH – Relax & Lunch

After heavy history, you need to breathe.

Mangapwani beach is secret, quiet, white sand, no resorts, no sellers. Just you, fishermen, and turquoise water. Very clean.

• Swim: Water calm, perfect
• Lunch: I bring you to Mangapwani Restaurant – local seafood pilau $7, or you bring picnic. Or I can arrange BBQ on beach – fresh fish grilled in front of you $12 – my wife cooks!
• Coral Cave Swimming: At low tide, there is another small coral cave where you can swim in fresh water – like Kuza Cave but no crowds!

Relax 1 hour – process what you saw.

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM – Drive Back to Hotel
Back to hotel by 3:30PM – still time for sunset at your beach.

DETAILS YOU ALWAYS ASK ME:

• Duration: 6-7 hours total – 3 hours driving + 3 hours tours + beach time
• Is cave scary? Dark, but safe – we have torch, flat ground. Not claustrophobic – big cave. Kids 8+ can enter. If you fear dark, you can wait outside at beach.
• Difference between Stone Town Slave Market vs Mangapwani? Stone Town = OFFICIAL market where slaves sold legally before 1873 – church now. Mangapwani = ILLEGAL hiding place AFTER 1873 – cave on beach. Both important, different stories. Best to see both, but Mangapwani is more hidden, less touristy, more emotional.
• Walking: Spice farm 1km flat, cave 500m, beach easy – good for elders.
• What to bring? Closed shoes for farm & cave (no flip flops – bats poop!), hat, flashlight (we have), swimsuit for beach, cash.
• Is it ethical? Yes – entrance fees go to village and cave preservation. We go with local keeper, not big company.
• Can I swim in cave lake? In Mangapwani main slave cave – no swimming, sacred place. But nearby coral cave you can swim fresh water – I show you.

Big companies skip Mangapwani – too far, they don’t know keeper. I am from Mangapwani village side – my family lived here. The cave keeper is my neighbor, he opens locked chamber for me that others don’t see. And I tell personal family story – not Wikipedia story.
