Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park – The Last Jungle of Zanzibar

My friend, you came all the way to Zanzibar and you only saw beach? No, let me show you the real forest!

Jozani is the ONLY national park in Zanzibar. It’s where the famous Red Colobus Monkeys live – they live NOWHERE else in the world. Only here! They are so friendly, they have no fear of people. They jump above your head, they eat leaves, they make funny faces. My kids call them “Shy Monkeys with White Beard.”

And after monkeys, we walk in the magical Mangrove Forest on a wooden bridge – it feels like a movie.

Option 1: JOZANI HALF DAY – 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM (Most Popular)

9:00 AM – Pickup From Your Hotel
I pick you from anywhere – Paje, Jambiani, Stone Town, Nungwi. Drive to Jozani is beautiful – you see villages, spice farms, kids waving. About 30-60 min depending where you sleep.

10:00 AM – Arrival & Monkeys! – The Main Magic
We enter the park with a park ranger (government guide) + me. Park fee included.

First 30 seconds – you see them! Red Colobus Monkeys. 50+ of them. They are red, black, with white beard. They cannot digest sugar, so they never eat fruits, only leaves – that’s why their stomach is big! They are very peaceful, not like other monkeys who steal your food. You can come very close – 1 meter! They look at you, you look at them.

I will tell you their story – in 1990 they were almost extinct, only 1500 left. Now because of protection, we have 6000. Your ticket helps protect them.

I take amazing photos for you – monkeys jumping over your head. Best photos in Zanzibar!

We walk about 1 hour in the forest – big mahogany trees, eucalyptus, many birds, maybe you see Sykes monkeys, bush babies, chameleons.

11:00 AM – Mangrove Boardwalk – The Secret World
We drive 5 minutes to the Mangrove Forest. Here we walk on a long wooden bridge built over the swamp. So quiet, so beautiful. You hear only birds. Mangroves breathe through roots above water – very strange! The ranger shows you how mangroves protect Zanzibar from big waves, how crabs and fish live inside roots.

11:45 AM – Visit to Spice Farm or Butterfly Center (Optional, FREE)
On the way back, I can stop at a small local spice farm or Zanzibar Butterfly Center – you can see how cinnamon grows, taste fresh lemongrass tea. No extra charge, just my gift.

12:30 PM – Drive Back to Hotel
You back at hotel for lunch, with memory card full of monkeys!

Other companies just drive you and leave you with ranger who speaks fast. I stay with you. I know all monkey families – I know where the big male “Mzee Kijana” sleeps! I know where to get best light for photos. And I am from Jozani village – my uncle is a ranger there 20 years.
